Artificial Intelligence is just one of the areas having a profound effect on ethics. This week Dr. Paul Root Wolpe the director of the Center for Ethics at Emory University, talks with me about the impact of technology and what it will mean to be human in the digital age, on the next QTS Experience.

Paul Root Wolpe is the Raymond F. Schinazi Distinguished Research Chair in Jewish Bioethics; a professor in the departments of medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neuroscience and biological behavior, and sociology; and the director of the Center for Ethics. Dr. Wolpe moved to Emory University in summer 2008 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was on the faculty for more than 20 years in the departments of psychiatry, sociology, and medical ethics, and faculty in its Center for Bioethics.
Dr. Wolpe spent 15 years as senior bioethicist for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He is the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Bioethics Neuroscience and sits on the editorial boards of more than a dozen professional journals in medicine and ethics. He is the president of the Association of Bioethics Program Directors; a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities; a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the country's oldest medical society; and a fellow of the Hastings Center, the oldest bioethics institute in America. He also served as the first national bioethics adviser to Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
His publications span the fields of sociology, medicine, and bioethics, and he has contributed to a variety of encyclopedias on bioethical issues. A futurist interested in social dynamics, Dr. Wolpe focuses on the social, religious, ethical, and ideological impact of medicine and technology on the human condition. Considered one of the founders of the field of neuroethics, which examines the ethical implications of neuroscience, he also writes about other emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence. His teaching and publications range across many other fields of bioethics, including death and dying, genetics and eugenics, sexuality and gender, mental health and illness, alternative medicine, and bioethics in extreme environments such as space. He frames those discussions through his sociological interest in knowledge formation, ideology, religion, and social movements. He also writes and talks about the Jewish contribution to thinking about the ethical aspects of medicine and technology. He is the co-author of the textbook Sexuality and Gender in Society, and editor and a key author of the end-of-life guide Behoref Hayamim: In the Winter of Life.
Dr. Wolpe has served on a number of national and international nonprofit organizational boards and working groups, such as Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence Selection Committee and DARPA’s Neuroscience ELSI Panel. He has testified twice to the President's Commission on the Study of Bioethical Issues in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences’ Responsible Science Committee that rewrote the canonical volume “Responsible Science,” and Co-Chaired the American Psychological Association’s Ethics Commission looking into reorganizing the APA’s ethics procedures in response to disclosure of its participation in ‘enhanced interrogation’ collaboration with the CIA and Department of Defense. He is also a consultant to academic institutions and the biomedical industry.
A dynamic and popular speaker internationally, Dr. Wolpe has been chosen by the Teaching Company as a "Superstar Teacher of America," and his courses are distributed internationally on audio and videotape. He has won the World Technology Network Award in Ethics, has been featured in a TED talk, and was profiled in Atlantic Magazine as a "Brave Thinker of 2011." Dr. Wolpe is a contributor to broadcast and print media, as well as having been featured on 60 Minutes and profiled in the Science Times of the New York Times.

Next week, I plan on attending the humans to mars summit at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. While I have always been fascinated by space travel and our universe, I am equally fascinated by the evolving technologies that are benefiting us here on Earth while we pursue the stars. New ways of communications, remote healthcare, surgery, printing our own food, the list goes on. I've invited Chris Carberry the CEO of Explore Mars, a nonprofit organization committed to this effort and the sponsor of this summit, to join me for a quick dialogue to help us understand what's going on at the summit, what we can expect to see and experience, and why you and I should care about sending Humans to Mars. Chris Carberry is the CEO and co-founder of Explore Mars, Inc. (Explore Mars), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit space advocacy organization that was created to advance the goal of sending humans to Mars by the mid-2030s. Carberry is a well-respected expert and influential director of strategic alliances in the space community as well as with non-traditional organizations.
Carberry has presented oral (and written) testimony to both the United States Senate as well as the United States House of Representatives and has been active in all levels of policy engagement with both the Executive and Legislative branches of government.
In recent years, he has overseen Explore Mars’ annual Humans to Mars Summit, the largest annual conference focused on sending humans to Mars. He has also spearheaded dozens of programs including the Mars Innovation Forum, the annual Community Workshops for the Achievability and Sustainability of Human Exploration of Mars series, the AR/VR and Space workshop series, the ISS and Mars Conference in Washington, D.C. and in Strasbourg, France, and the Women and Mars Conference in Washington, D.C. He has also conducted programs overseas, in such countries as the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Carberry is also the creator, and one of the senior editors, of the annual publication known as the Humans to Mars Report that was highlighted in the NASA Transition Authorization Act of 2017. In 2013, Carberry was awarded a NASA Group Achievement award.
Carberry is the author of over 100 articles and Op-Ed pieces that have appeared in such publications as USA Today, US News and World Report, Huffington Post, The Washington Post, San Jose Mercury Times, Foxnews.com, Houston Chronicle, The Hill, The Telegram (UK), The Boston Herald and many other publications. He has been featured in over 100 national and international television, radio programs and podcasts such as NBC Nightly News, Fox News, CNN, BBC World, and NPR and is frequently asked for commentary from print news outlets around the world.
Prior to joining Explore Mars, Carberry served as Executive Director of The Mars Society. He also played a leadership role in congressional outreach events such as the 2006-2020 Space Exploration Alliance Legislative Blitz and has coordinated numerous briefing panels and other events on Capitol Hill over the past two decades. Carberry serves on the Board of Advisors for iGiant and Mars World Enterprises, and is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Space Society.
Carberry is the author of the 2019 book, Alcohol in Space: Past, Present and Future, and the upcoming book, The Music of Space (to be released in 2022). Both volumes are being adapted into documentary films.
Prior to his space career, Carberry worked as an archivist of modern political papers and was research assistant for numerous best-selling biographers.

David S. Ginger earned dual B.S. degrees in chemistry and physics at Indiana University in 1997 with departmental honors and highest distinction, performing undergraduate research with Victor E. Viola.
He received a British Marshall Scholarship and an NSF Graduate Fellowship and completed his Ph.D. in physics with Neil C. Greenham in the Optoelectronics group at the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2001.
After a joint NIH and DuPont Postdoctoral Fellowship at Northwestern University in Chad Mirkin’s lab, he joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle where he is currently the Alvin L. and Verla R. Kwiram Endowed Professor in Chemistry, Washington Research Foundation Distinguished Scholar in Clean Energy, and Adjunct Professor of Physics, and serves as the Chief Scientist of the Washington state funded UW Clean Energy Institute. He holds a joint appointment as a Senior Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL), and is the co-founding co-director of the Northwest Institute for Materials Physics, Chemistry, and Technology (NW IMPACT), a joint research collaboration between PNNL and UW.
He is an elected fellow of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) and has been named a Research Corporation Cottrell Scholar, a Research Corporation Scialog Fellow in solar energy conversion, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, and has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and the ACS Unilever Award in Colloid and Surfactant Science.
He is the 2012 recipient of the Burton Medal of the Microscopy Society of America, participated in the 2012-2013 class of the Defense Science Study Group, and was honored as a Finalist for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists in 2016.
His research centers on the physical chemistry of nanostructured materials with applications in optoelectronics, energy and sensing, and his group makes use of techniques ranging from scanning probe microscopy to optical spectroscopy.
He is also an Associate Editor at the ACS journal Chemical Reviews.

Patrick Allitt was born and raised in the English town of Derby. He was an undergraduate at Oxford University (1974-77) and a graduate student in U.S. History at the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D. 1986). He held postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard and Princeton, and has been a professor of American history at Emory University in Atlanta since 1988. He is the author of seven books, most recently A Climate of Crisis: America in the Age of Environmentalism (Penguin). He is also the presenter of eleven recorded lecture series with The Great Courses, most recently, The Great Tours: England, Scotland, and Wales (36 lectures).

My guest this week is my friend Dean Bubley, a 5G, Cloud, mobile connectivity, telecom guru based out of the UK, and we got together to talk about the future trends in mobile connectivity (our apps). We spend, on average, 5 hours a day using apps; almost everything we do involves an app. Banking, shopping, entertainment, security, you name it – we use it. That’s a significant part of our waking lives. Whether you realize it or not – the future of apps is important to you. What would happen if the networks and internet our devices use are compromised, or worse, not available at all? Sound farfetched?
